🔗 Share this article From Praise to Rage: Conservative Response to Epstein File Disclosure is Mixed. Conservative responses to the partial release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner. Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter outlining the redaction process. Concerns Prompted by Redactions While Trump's name and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive black blocks raise serious concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for increased transparency. “People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. Via a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and implied that a future Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued. A Faction of Conservative Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure But, a segment of conservative commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions. The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities blacked out. Yet some do not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the attack. “This is pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely accused President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer. “New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.” Former President Spokesperson Releases Statement Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding these files for months only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment. “The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added. Overall Conservative Comment Remains Subdued Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was relatively muted after the release, particularly when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to enact a law requiring the documents' release. Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were given physical folders of files that included little new data.
