The deal values the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – after the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure in September. Wolff, who holds one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a shareholding approximately 5%. The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and chief executive officer if the sale goes through. Ownership Structure The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the enterprise. A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We will be making no comment on this. The governance of the team will remain unchanged, and each shareholder are dedicated to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One." Financial Growth The deal signifies a substantial rise in worth of the Mercedes team after Ineos acquired its share for £208 million in 2022. This surge reflects the expansion in valuations of F1 teams in the past few years due to the growing popularity of Formula 1 around the world. This was also seen in the success of the Formula 1 film starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and earned more than $630 million (£458 million) at the box office. It is the actor's top-grossing movie and the most successful sports movie to date. Current Performance The Mercedes team are second in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining in the current championship. Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 races so far and is fourth in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen. Mercedes won a record eight consecutive team titles and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
