UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the main character exploring a desolate church.

A World of Personal Horror

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."

The core gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."

After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one standing might be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
