Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to challenge particular rulings made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
